About us

Centro Cultural La Moneda (CCLM) is Chile’s most visited exhibition center. Located in the civic center of Santiago, it hosts exhibitions, programs and events of cultural and artistic interest. It opened its doors in January 2006, presenting since then more than 100 Chilean and international exhibitions. CCLM seeks to provide a relevant cultural experience, enhancing its visits with guided tours and activities for a wide range of audiences.

Its 7200 square-meter building, an architectural marvel by Chilean architect Cristián Undurraga, integrates a diverse agenda across three underground levels, with prominent exhibitions in the main rooms in addition to films, documentaries and animation at the Cineteca Nacional and galleries specialized in design, photography and heritage. At the CCLM building, you can also find restaurants, cafes and shops that ensure an enjoyable visit.

OUR HISTORY / HISTORY OF CCLM

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Moneda Cultural Center was born as part of the projects related to the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Republic of Chile. The greatest antecedent of this initiative dates back to 1910 when for the first Centenary, works such as the Museum of Fine Arts and the National Library were inaugurated. For the Bicentennial the idea was to rescue that spirit, with proposals that left their mark on the country’s heritage. One of these initiatives was Plaza de la Ciudadanía, located in the civic center of Santiago, and La Moneda Cultural Center (CCLM), setting up a meeting space and major milestones.

The construction that houses CCLM began its development in 2004. Created by the Chilean architect Cristián Undurraga, this 7200 m structure has three underground floors and two access points, along Teatinos (west) and Morandé (east) streets.

The building was officially inaugurated on January 26, 2006, with the exhibition Mexico: from the body to the cosmos. The words of President Ricardo Lagos to give a starting point were reflected in CCLM principal access: “Pacific and southern Chile, where cultures meet and dialogue, here it opens to know and enrich itself with the cultures of the world.”

In its 13 years of operation, CCLM has hosted shows of great significance and appeal such as Frida and Diego: shared lives; Ancient China and the Terracotta Army; Matta Centenario, 11.11.11; Great Modern. Peggy Guggenheim Collection; Andy Warhol. Pop art icon, among the most outstanding.

Within CCLM facilities, projects that are in line with the patrimonial protection of our country have been configured. At CCLM started the Visual Arts Documentation Center, CEDOC, a file that contains audiovisual records, books and catalogs of Chilean contemporary art. In 2018 CEDOC moved to Cerrillos Contemporary Art Center.

At CCLM, in its early days, the Cineteca Nacional de Chile was established. An institution in charge of safeguarding, preserving and disseminating the country’s cinematographic and audiovisual heritage. Until today, the Cineteca cinema and micro-cinema room are part of the CCLM facilities.

Throughout its history, CCLM has had a board of directors committed to the country’s cultural development and authorities who have given their best efforts in the different stages of this institution. The first general coordinator was Morgana Rodríguez Larraín, a publicist with studies in culture, who launched the project. In 2007, the Executive Direction Alejandra Serrano Madrid took office, who strengthened and expanded CCLM’s audiences, positioning the space as one of the most visited exhibition centers in the country.

In 2018 Beatriz Bustos Oyanedel, who has a long history in curatorship and cultural management national and internationally, was appointed as Executive Director. Her administration aims to strengthen the cultural experience and diversify its program, so that audiences with different interests, ages, nationalities and socio-economic conditions can access culture, through a multidisciplinary agenda and activities that lead to debate, reflection, learning and aesthetic enjoyment.

Currently La Moneda Cultural Center continues to consolidate itself as a meeting place for varied points of views, artistic and cultural manifestations.
